A Calling, Not a Job

DR. EUGENIA CATERNOR’S JOURNEY TO

BECOMING A

LEADING WEIGHT LOSS SPECIALIST.

Dr. Eugenia Caternor’s journey from Ghana to becoming one of the country’s leading weight loss specialists is nothing short of inspiring.

From her early days in high school, she was the go-to person when classmates felt sick, always armed with Tylenol or Ibuprofen. This innate desire to help others guided her career choices and ultimately led her to a calling she sees as more of a ministry than a job.

Dr. Caternor had long dreamed of attending medical school, a goal she brought with her from Ghana. However, her father advised her to pursue nursing first. “If you finish nursing school and still want to continue, then you can go to medical school,” he told her. “But if you choose to settle down and have a family, at least now you have a career.” Reflecting on this advice, she says, “It was the best thing I could have done.”

Expanding Her Expertise

Heeding her father’s advice, Dr. Caternor relocated to the United States in 1996. Without delay, she began her pursuit of a nursing degree from George Mason University, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in 2002.

Driven by a passion for learning and a desire to make a difference, she expanded her educational credentials by obtaining a Master’s Degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Doctorate in Nursing from Indiana State University. In addition, she obtained a Psychiatric Mental Health Certificate from LaSalle University. Dr. Caternor is also a Certified Advanced Grief Counseling Specialist and Weight Management Specialist.

A Shift to Weight Management

Dr. Caternor’s professional journey began in primary care, where she quickly noticed a troubling trend. “I was working in a primary care office and saw that many patients had chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol.

“Instead of addressing the root cause, we simply increased their medication,” she recalls. This realization prompted a significant career shift. “I felt like I wasn’t

truly helping my patients. By not educating them on a healthy lifestyle, I was contributing to the problem.”

As a nurse, she gained extensive experience in hospitals and home care settings and also served as an adjunct faculty member in the nursing program at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland. Determined to make a real difference, Dr. Caternor left her primary care position in 2014 to focus on weight management. She believes in treating obesity as a chronic disease, a stance supported by the World Health Organization, which has recognized obesity as a chronic condition requiring long-term treatment and management. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects over 40% of adults in the United States, highlighting the urgent need for effective weight management solutions.

Addressing Mental and Physical Health

A significant part of her practice involves addressing the psychological aspects of weight management. “Many patients feel discouraged because they’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work. I tell them that with God, all things are possible. Mental health and obesity go hand in hand.”

Sustainable Weight Loss Solutions

Her practice offers a comprehensive approach, including FDA-approved appetite suppressants, which are most effective when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.

In a society that often stigmatizes obesity, Dr. Caternor offers hope and tangible solutions. She treats her patients with empathy and understanding, helping them navigate their weight loss journey with the support they need to succeed.

Her holistic approach not only addresses the physical aspects of obesity but also the emotional and psychological factors, ensuring her patients achieve lasting health and wellness.
