Stay on Track: Honoring Your Health and Nutrition Goals During National Physical Fitness & Sports Month

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in the United States—a perfect time to focus on your health and well-being.

Whether you’re just getting started or picking up where you left off, this month is an opportunity to recommit to your fitness and nutrition goals. Small, consistent changes—like taking a daily walk or choosing balanced meals—can make a big difference over time.

Why May Is the Best Time to Reaffirm Your Wellness Goals

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month was established in 1983 by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, designating May as a time to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity and sports participation.

The month-long observance encourages Americans of all ages to adopt healthier lifestyles by staying active and making positive nutrition choices.

Many people start the new year with ambitious health and fitness resolutions, but by the time spring rolls around, those goals often take a backseat to busy schedules and shifting priorities. That’s what makes May a timely and valuable reminder to pause, reassess, and recommit to your well-being.

Think of it as a midyear check-in to help you get back on track or build new momentum.

Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to improve your overall health. It lowers the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. But the benefits don’t stop there—exercise also enhances your mental health by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, improving mood and emotional resilience, boosting energy, and promoting better sleep quality.

Equally important is the role of nutrition. What you eat directly impacts how you feel and how well your body performs. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats fuels your workouts, supports recovery, strengthens your immune system, and helps regulate your metabolism.

This month, challenge yourself to create or revisit a fitness plan that works for your lifestyle. Whether it’s adding more walks to your week, trying a local fitness class, or preparing more meals at home, every small step counts.
